Dr. Teresa Ramon, our dear Senior Scientist from the Biosciences Department, was granted by the University of Granada with the Extraordinary Doctoral Thesis Award. Congratulations Tere!
Our scientific advisor, Dr. Priscila Kosaka, was awarded by Fundación Fero for her research projects in translational oncology. Congratulations!
Mecwins IVD4Sepsis project has been selected for publication in the ‘Results in Brief’ section of the European Commission’s CORDIS website.
European Commission’s CORDIS website selects 120 projects a month based on domain, timing and quality of results. Of these projects, 80 articles a month are published on a first come-first served basis.
The article: “Novel ultrasensitive detection device for early Sepsis diagnosis” has been published on the CORDIS website in six languages. Have a peek!
A new paper from our scientific staff and researchers from the Autonomous University of Madrid (UAM) was recently published in the Journal of Applied Science of Elsevier:
Chloé Rodriguez, Paul Dietrich, Vicente Torres-Costa, Virginia Cebrián, Cristina Gómez-Abad, Ana Díaz, Oscar Ahumada, and Miguel Manso Silván. “Near ambient pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy monitoring of the surface immobilization cascade on a porous silicon-gold nanoparticle FET biosensor”.
In this publication the authors provide sandwich biodetection strategies on porous Silicon substrates.
Mecwins in collaboration with Bionanomechanics Lab from IMN-CSIC (Instituto de Micro y Nanotecnología de Madrid), Advanced Photonic and Biofunctional Materials Group from UAM (Universidad Autónoma de Madrid), and Chemical Engineering Department from UPC (Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya Barcelonatech) will carry out a project to develop a technology for the ultrasensitive detection of infectious markers in blood donations.
The project “Spectrasens – A new hyperspectral platform for the simultaneous and ultrasensitive detection of infectious disease markers in blood donations”, will get more than 1M€ in financial aid.
Spectrasens is financed by:
/FEDER/Ministerio de Ciencia, Innovación y Universidades–Agencia Estatal de Investigación/_Proyecto RTC-2017-6311-1-1/ under the RETOS-COLABORACION program for the period 2018-2020.
Mecwins has been granted with an Horizon 2020 – SME Instrument (Phase I) for our project IVD4Sepsis (H2020-SME-PHASE1-2017 Ver1.00 20180214) with 50.000 €
The Royal Spanish Society of Physics (RSEF) created in 1958 the RSEF Physics Awards, intented to recognize and reward those who have achieved the excellence in any professional activity related to physics. These awards, given by the Royal Spanish Society of Physics (RSEF) and the BBVA Foundation, annually select the best researchers and professors in the field, recognizing their talent, effort and expertise.
The governing body of the RSEF awards the 2018 Physics Awards for Physics, Innovation & Technology to our promoter Prof. Javier Tamayo. His achievements have been recognized by the jury calling attention to his contributions at a scientific, technological and innovation level in the field of biomechanics, being a clear example of how the success of research in basic physics has a high impact on society and can be transferred to the industry.
Congratulations to Javier and all winners of the 2018 RSEF Physics Awards across all categories.
During the last 4 days from 20th to 23th of November, Mecwins team has been involved in a new installation at Chinese Academy of Inspection Quarantine (CAIQ). Prof. Lei from CAIQ has purchased one SCALA instrument to make advances in her biosensing research with microcantilevers. We would like to thank to Tao Wang ang Guo Guanghui (from GermanTech, our exclusive sales representative) for their valuable support and also our grateful to Prof. Lei for her kindness and hospitality during our stay.
As usual, it was a pleasure travelling to Beijing and we are looking forward to coming back again very soon.
Our project “IVD4Sepsis: Novel ultrasensitive detection device for early Sepsis diagnosis” was selected for funding from a pool of more than 2.200 proposals. Mecwins will be supported in the so-called Phase 1 of the SME Instrument from the EU’s research and innovation programme, Horizon 2020, to get these innovations faster on the market.
The SME Instrument is part of the European Innovation Council (EIC) pilot that provides top-class innovators, entrepreneurs, small companies and scientists with funding opportunities and acceleration services.

Grifols, through Progenika Biopharma, and CRB Inverbío undersign EUR 2 million of Mecwins’ capital increase each. The total investment of EUR 4 million will allow Mecwins to complete the introduction of the technology into the Life Sciences Market and to conduct clinical trials to demonstrate the diagnostic capabilities of its ultra-sensitive technology (a million times higher than that used in routine clinical practice).
